Investing for a Dynamic Social Economy in Bristol
This report of a study commissioned by the SEBDP project looked at ways of improving access to sources of credit and loan finance. The aims were: to assess the capacity of Social Economy organisations in the Bristol area to attract and utilise credit and loan finance; to research the needs of Social Economy organisations for credit and loan finance and the availability of such finance for the sector, to identify the obstacles that Social Economy organisations and providers of loan finance face in doing business together and; to
suggest ways in which these obstacles might be addressed.

Social Enterprise Support Services in Bristol
In October 2001 Baker Brown Associates produced a report for Bristol City Council reviewing business support services for social enterprises. Since then there have been many developments at a national, regional and local level, which have transformed the landscape of support for social enterprises. This report highlights these changes and the opportunities they present for further developing social enterprises support services in Bristol.

Activist to Entrepreneur
This report identifies the feasibility and early development work required for a skills programme for active and potential social entrepreneurs in the Bristol area.
Bristol City Council commissioned the work and the review began in late 2003 to be completed by the end of spring 2004. This project is set firmly within the context of the Social Economy Bristol Development Programme, itself a programme of research and capacity building activities focused on the social economy in Bristol.
An audit in 2001 found that the value of the social economy in Bristol is more than £223 million, employing 9,400 people (almost 5% of the total workforce). There may be many opportunities for growth in the social economy (in particular the ‘modernising local government’ agenda, RDA spend and neighbourhood renewal activity) and it is recognised that whilst the challenges facing social entrepreneurs are significant, support mechanisms for training and development may not be sufficient to meet these.
The underpinning purpose of Activist to Entrepreneur is to recognise the particular development needs of the individual (rather than the organisation) in establishing and growing social economy organisations.

Gold Standard Best Practice Report
The Gold Standard was a flagship project supporting Social Enterprise development in Knowle West. Five social enterprises took part to enable their fast track business development and growth. This 2 year project was managed by the Knowle West Development Trust (KWDT) and BACEN were contracted to provide business support. It also had support from Business West. This project contributed towards supporting the development of successful social enterprises in communities experiencing social exclusion and promoting local employment opportunities in the Knowle West area. Liverpool based consultants Pulse Regeneration carried out an evaluation of the project and also investigated best practice in social enterprise support elsewhere and produced a report of their findings. That report is now available here.

Summary of C3 Project
This project running from 2004-2007 is to develop tools and pilot new models that support a wide range of social economy business advice and development organisations, to build in key elements of performance improvement, and quality management approaches into their work. This will enable the sector to become more credible and competitive, leading to a fuller and more confident engagement in wider market opportunities. The approach will be developed throughout the West of England.
